CHEMISTRY TRAINEE 2021-22
Overall I think Red Kite has a really good training programme which is associated with the University of Leeds and many other partners. The placement schools are spread across Leeds and North Yorkshire. I am already a research scientist at the University of Leeds so to get the chance of another year as a Leeds Uni student was important to me.

It was quite daunting making the decision as it was a complete career change but when I decided to do it Red Kite was always going to be the provider I went with. The level of support you get both inside and outside the school environment is second to none. I don’t know of another training provider who supports you in the same way especially before the course has even begun with all the learning resources and tips.

I chose part time because I have a family and other personal circumstances meant that this would fit into my life. It was flexible and it meant that it wouldn’t take too much time out of my week and away from my two young children.

Taking that first lesson was probably my highlight, having that sense of working with the class teacher but using the behavioural techniques we learnt and having the children respond to you was a great feeling.

I think building relationships with the kids was a highlight for me. I forgot how funny teenagers could be and some of the things that the students came out with and learning new things from them was really great. It was a real full circle moment for me as I was worried when coming into teaching that I wasn’t right for it and specific moments with the kids made me realise that actually I am.

I have loved my year with Red Kite. It has felt like a really full year and I have definitely been kept on my toes in a good way. I have felt really supported. The best thing that happened this year was getting my job. I would say that this is all down to my ECL who prepared me for my interview. He spent lots of time on Teams going through all different interview questions. My ECL also gave me lots of ideas when I was teaching the children too.
