Red Kite 2021 (4)

There’s no more rewarding career than teaching

As a primary teacher, you’ll prepare children for life – academically and emotionally. You’ll encourage them to be curious about the world around them, inspiring a love of learning and empowering them to reach their full potential.

At Red Kite Teacher Training, we offer full-time and part-time options for primary courses that give you the experience and confidence to begin teaching as soon as you are qualified.

Our Primary courses are based in our partner schools across West and North Yorkshire.

On successful completion you will receive recommendation for Qualified Teacher Status (QTS) from Red Kite Teacher Training and a Postgraduate Certificate of Education (PGCE) from the University of Leeds.

Leaders have meticulously designed the ITE curriculum to develop trainees’ depth and breadth of knowledge across the full range of primary subjects. Trainees are introduced to carefully ordered content that is systematically revisited. They develop a deep understanding of how to teach early reading, including systematic synthetic phonics. Trainees are well prepared to teach the range of phonics programmes used by different schools. Leaders ensure that trainees confidently understand curriculum and pedagogy across all of the subjects they might teach. Trainees are exceptionally well prepared to assume their role as ECTs.

Our Primary Courses

Primary 3-7

Primary 3-7 specialises in Early Years and Key Stage 1, teaching you how to give children the best possible start to learning in a fun and creative way, with a focus on early maths and phonics.

You’ll also develop all the skills you need to teach children in any Primary year group, which gives you the flexibility to teach older year groups once you’re qualified.

During your course, you’ll work with many inspirational teachers from across the partnership, showing you how they continuously strive to improve practice in the classroom, and enable progression across the full range of Primary year groups.

Primary 5-11

The Primary 5-11 course provides a broad range of teaching experience across Key Stages 1 and 2. As with the 3-7 and 7-11 courses, you’ll develop the skills to teach any Primary age group once you’re qualified, but this course will give you the opportunity to experience teaching within the different Key Stages during your placements.

In the Primary year groups, creativity is at the heart of our teaching, both in the core subjects of English, Maths and Science, and across the full breadth of National Curriculum Primary subjects.

You’ll enjoy working with many inspirational teachers from across the partnership, showing you how they continuously strive to improve practice in the classroom, and enable progression across the full range of Primary year groups. You’ll also develop inspirational and innovative techniques to enthuse and engage young people.

Primary 7-11

The Primary 7-11 course specialises in teaching Key Stage 2, developing children’s social skills and academic knowledge to a high level in Year 6. In these year groups creativity is at the heart of our teaching, both in the core subjects of English, Maths and Science, and across the full breadth of National Curriculum Primary subjects.

You’ll enjoy working with many inspirational teachers from across the partnership, showing you how they continuously strive to improve practice in the classroom, and enable progression across the full range of Primary year groups. You’ll also develop inspirational and innovative techniques to enthuse and engage young people.

Throughout the course, you’ll be developing all the skills you need to teach children in any Primary year group, giving you the flexibility to teach younger year groups once you’re qualified.

Primary with SEND

This high-quality programme is designed for entrants to the teaching profession who aspire to teach in special schools or to become Special Educational Needs Coordinators in mainstream schools.

The programme is delivered by serving SENDCos and professionals based in special schools.

The programme is sufficiently flexible to allow trainees to access learning on-line; to train within their locality; and to tailor the year to meet their needs. Trainees will experience placements in mainstream and special school settings.

In addition to Qualified Teacher Status (QTS), trainees will achieve a PGCE from the University of Leeds. This evidence-based research will support trainees’ critical thinking about behaviour and barriers to learning related to teaching children with learning difficulties.

By the end of the programme, trainees will be equipped to complete their NQT induction in mainstream and special school settings.

The course provides a broad range of teaching experience across Key Stages 1 and 2.

In the Primary year groups, creativity is at the heart of our teaching, both in the core subjects of English, Maths and Science, and across the full breadth of National Curriculum Primary subjects.
