Red Kite 2021 (4)

There’s no more rewarding career than teaching

As a primary teacher, you’ll prepare children for life – academically and emotionally. You’ll encourage them to be curious about the world around them, inspiring a love of learning and empowering them to reach their full potential.

At Red Kite Teacher Training, we offer full-time and part-time options for primary courses that give you the experience and confidence to begin teaching as soon as you are qualified.

Our Primary courses are based in our partner schools across West and North Yorkshire.

On successful completion you will receive recommendation for Qualified Teacher Status (QTS) from Red Kite Teacher Training and a Postgraduate Certificate of Education (PGCE) from the University of Leeds.

Leaders have meticulously designed the ITE curriculum to develop trainees’ depth and breadth of knowledge across the full range of primary subjects. Trainees are introduced to carefully ordered content that is systematically revisited. They develop a deep understanding of how to teach early reading, including systematic synthetic phonics. Trainees are well prepared to teach the range of phonics programmes used by different schools. Leaders ensure that trainees confidently understand curriculum and pedagogy across all of the subjects they might teach. Trainees are exceptionally well prepared to assume their role as ECTs.

Ofsted 2024

Our Primary Courses

Primary 3-7

All trainees will receive training on understanding child development and developmental milestones of the pre-school curriculum.

The Primary 3-7 course offers trainees the opportunity to specialise in Early Years and Key Stage 1, with one placement spent in each key stage. Additional training by the Red Kite Programme Lead for Early Years will ensure trainees know current mandatory legislation, the overarching principles of EYFS and know the seven areas of learning and development.

There will be specific training for Primary 3-7 trainees which will focus on communication and interaction, continuous provision and observations. By the end of the programme, trainees will be equipped to begin their ECT induction in EYFS or Key Stage 1 year groups. All Primary 3-7 should arrange to spend time in a Nursery setting to observe and work with children in the younger phase of EYFS.

Primary 5-11

Primary 5-11, which is the most popular course delivered by Red Kite Teacher Training, enables trainees to receive training across the whole range of primary ages. One placement will be spent in key stage one and one placement in key stage 2.

Trainees will focus on and receive high quality training in all subjects of the primary curriculum which is delivered by practising subject leads from across our wide range of primary settings. Trainees on the 5-11 programme will also receive training from EYFS and SEND specialists to ensure a broad knowledge base of the teaching and learning strategies used in all years of the primary age phase.

You’ll enjoy working with many inspirational teachers from across the partnership, showing you how they continuously strive to improve practice in the classroom, and enable progression across the full range of Primary year groups. You’ll also develop inspirational and innovative techniques to enthuse and engage young people.

Primary 7-11

Trainees on the Primary 7-11 route will specialise in working with pupils in key stage 2 and both placements will be in years 3-6.

Trainees will focus on and receive high quality training in all subjects of the primary curriculum which is delivered by practising subject leads from across our wide range of primary settings.

Trainees will also receive training in phonics to ensure they are equipped with the strategies children use to decode, segment and blend to become early readers as these are skills key stage two children will continue to use. Trainees on the 7-11 route will receive additional training on preparation for transition to KS3.

Primary with SEND

All teachers are teachers of SEND and every trainee on the Red Kite Teacher Training programme will learn about current legislation, strategies to ensure learning is inclusive for all pupils and take part in a SEND Conference.

The 5-11 with SEND course is a high-quality training programme which is an enhancement of the mainstream programmes offered and designed for entrants to the teaching profession who aspire to teach in special schools or to become Special Educational Needs Coordinators in mainstream schools. Trainees following the SEND route will spend placement 1 in a mainstream setting and placement 2 in a special school.

With SEND Trainees will receive an additional eight days of training with a SEND specific focus such as speech, language and communication (including Makaton), ASC and contextualisation around SEND settings. The SEND specific training is delivered by serving SENDCos and professionals based in special schools. The additional days are highlighted on the SEND calendar.

By the end of the programme, trainees will be equipped to complete their ECT induction in mainstream or special school settings.
