The Red Kite Part Time Teacher Training Programme is an innovative, flexible, two-year training programme designed especially for people who have family commitments or need to work whilst training. Trainees can specialise in the 3-7 age range or the 5-11 age range.
In addition to the days in school, trainees will have eight days of input over the two years with the University of Leeds (this will be completed through blended online tutorials, remote learning and face-to-face lectures). There are four PGCE academic modules across the two years and Trainees will gain 60 masters credits; two assignments in Year 1 (30 credits) and two assignments in Year 2 (30 credits). Professional learning days are included in the training days (not in addition to days in school) although there may be an occasional day when trainees are required to attend an event such as an Employment Conference with peers across all programmes. There are four training venues (three in Leeds, one in Harrogate).

How will it work?
Trainees follow a carefully designed plan to support their learning with the same curriculum coverage as the full time programme. The course is structured to make sure that trainees take on classroom responsibility in a gradual, systematic manner. The programme will build trainees’ confidence, pedagogy and subject knowledge to give the necessary skills to become an effective classroom practitioner. A detailed calendar and handbook provide trainees with all the information that they need to plan ahead.
Over the two years, trainees will have taught in at least two schools and in two key stages. We recommend that trainees stay in one school for each year of the programme. Trainees will negotiate with the placement schools as to which days they will spend in school. Whilst these can be fixed or flexible, it is important to note that most of the Red Kite training days will be on a Thursday or Friday. The cyclical planning process, reviews and documentation are the same as the full-time course but spread over a longer time period. All part-time trainees receive the same training as the full-time trainees over the two years. Regular communication about expectations and planning responsibilities is key to a part-time trainee and they will become skilled at being flexible and adaptable by the end of the programme.
